What is all this fuss over our pH levels? Acid vs. alkaline? What and why in the world is this important? Why should I take care of this balance?
The acid and alkaline balance has been discussed for a few good years now. People are being told about alkalinity and why it is good for you.
What is acidic, what is alkaline?
Any range below a pH level of 7 is acidic, and above this number it becomes, or is alkaline. The
term pH stands for potentia hydrogenii which describes the amount of the activity of hydrogen in a
solution. There are many numbers to discuss when it comes to alkaline and acids, and clarifications
that need to be given about the “badness” of acidity. Acids are not bad for your body, in fact, the
body needs a certain amount of acidity. But at the same time the major organ in the body, and
actually the only one that is in an acidic melieu is the stomach. Stomach acids can go as low as pH 1-2. This acidity is very important for breakdown of different substances during digestion and helps to
eliminate pathogens, but too much acidity can lead to ulcers and other problems. Having said that,
the stomach is the only acidic organ, the rest is overall, and generally speaking alkaline in nature.
The most alkaline organ in the body is the pancreas. Excreting pancreatic enzymes and fluids with a
pH ranging as high as 8.8. The gallbladder is the second most alkaline gland/organ (as it is linked with the liver) ranging with a pH level of the bile as much as 8.5.
Different pathogens and disease forming microorganisms thrive in an acidic environment. That is one of many contributors to why people are subject to sickness in today’s so called “modern age.” Do you know what acids do to substances? They disintegrate them depending on the strengths of the acids. The same applies in the physical body as well. Lack of alkaline substances allows excess acids to create lots of damage within the structures of the body and beyond. Not only does that affect your body but also your emotional and mental state.

Did you know that babies are bathing themselves for 9 months in an alkaline liquid with a pH of 8.5?
Why do you think their skin is so soft and beautiful? Take a guess!
